April has been a very busy month and has flown by quickly! We have had lots of fun things happening in our classroom!
In Art we have been learning about different types of lines as well as different shapes. We read the books "Scribble" and "Mouse Shapes" and learned about how we use different lines and shapes to make pictures. Then we did some fun crafts using lines and shapes.
In French we have been learning about our 5 senses: sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. We did an activity where we used our sense of touch to try and figure out what materials were in the balloons. We also used some descriptive words to describe what we were feeling. Were the objects soft or hard? Were they smooth or bumpy? We took the children on a "Listening Walk" to use our ears and listen for different sounds outside. We heard cars, birds, dogs, people and buses!
In Math this month we looked at measurement using balancing scales. The children measured objects comparing and estimating their mass and volume. Which object has a bigger mass, which object has the bigger volume, which is smaller in volume and which is smaller in mass. We recorded our predictions and findings.
This past month we have been watching the transformation of our eggs into chicks! We had an incubator set up in the classroom with chicken eggs inside. After 21 days of the eggs being in the incubator we had 4 chicks that hatched! When they were ready, we transferred them from the incubator into a tank with a heat lamp where the children have been able to watch them grow! This past weekend they were taken back to the farm as they were getting to big for our classroom! We will miss our little chicks.
The children decided that they wanted to set up a show. They picked where the audience should sit and how an audience acts. Can you hear the singing and the guitar playing?
This Month we have been able to attend many different presentations! We had a presentation from Rocks and Rings where the children were given the opportunity to learn all about the sport Curling and then got to play a game! We had a presentation called "Looking at Pictures" where the children were exposed to and learned about different artists and different pieces of art. We also had Dr Doreen Smith Science Workshops come in to teach the children the science behind light. We learned about how light is made up of different colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. These colours are always in the same order when we see a rainbow! Dr D also taught us some new words: Transparent, translucent and Opaque.
During our inquiry on light, the children had an opportunity to learn how light can be reflected and how shadows occur depending of the location of the sun in the sky. We used an overhead projector to reflect a variety of objects of different sizes, shapes and colours onto the smartboard screen. With the use of flashlights, the children shined light onto glass prisms, gem, crystals and observed the changes.
Our Dramatic Play Area has been transformed into a Flower Shop! The children have been enjoying placing flower arrangement orders, writing cards out to family members and friends, arranging floral bouquets, using the cash register and pretend money to pay for the flowers.
The children have been enjoying constructing with the various loose parts placed at our learning centres. They have been making houses, churches and a marble run!
