This week we talked about Remembrance Day and why we remember. We made some poppies and crosses during art and turned them into a wreath to bring to our Remembrance Day Ceremony. During Religion we watched a video and learned a song about being a bucket filler. We then discussed as a group how we can all be bucket fillers . The children had a lot of fun reading the story "The Nowhere Box". After the story we discussed where we would go in our own nowhere box. Some of the places we would like to go are: Around the world (Keith), to Disneyland (Veronica), to the Jungle (Estelle), to space (Ntwari), to Toronto to visit my sisters (Addison), the North Pole (Chanel), the Princess Place (Sofia) and to New York (Christopher). We then played with our own nowhere box! The children used different art materials to decorate their nowhere box. On French days, we started talking about healthy eating and choices. We learned about some different vegetables: la carotte, le brocoli, le chou, le chou fleur, le poireau, l'haricot vert. We read the story "Stone Soup" and decided to use all of our vegetables to make 'Une soupe d'amitié', a friendship soup. The children helped to wash all the vegetables and break them up to put in our soup. Some discovered new smells! When the soup was all ready we all enjoyed a bowl of our 'soupe d'amitié'. When we were done eating, we thought it would be nice to share our 'soupe d'amitié'! Here are some more pictures from our week.
This week in Science we performed many float and sink experiments. We compared different items and made our predictions. The children made their predictions on; a spoon, coin, feather, paper clip, pencil and a rock. What were our discoveries? We experimented with oranges and play doh. We made predictions on an orange with its peel and an orange without its peel. We introduced buoyancy! We used play doh in the shape of a ball and play doh with a hole in the middle. Which would be more buoyant? We started our Animal Hospital this week at our dramatic play center. We observed many literacy, numeracy, emotional and social skills during play. The children imagined they were veterinarians, pet owners, pets and pet store employees. There was interactive and individual play exhibited by all the children. We introduced Growth Mindsets that tackle challenges with a positive attitude. We are encouraging the children to tackle challenges by never giving up and always doing their best. In stead of saying I Can't do this, we can say I Can do this! During table top activities the children used letter tiles to print their name. They practised printing letters of the alphabet using a cotton swab and paint. The children performed sorting and counting activities with crystals and numbers from 1-15. Here are some more pictures of the children during play this week.
Our week has been filled with Halloween Activities! We continued to explore our Pumpkin Patch in our dramatic play area, we made some fun Halloween crafts and learned more Halloween songs. The students loved dancing to this song and getting the chance to move their bones! A new spooky French song was introduced, along with the words: sorciere, fantome, vampire, et nuit. The children begin each day with weekly table top activities. This week we worked on our fine motors skills, counting and number recognition and matching upper and lower case letters. This is a great way to warm up our brains and get ready for more learning! We finished our Pumpkin Inquiry by making our yummy pumpkin cookies! On Thursday we were lucky to have a visit from the Librarian from the Public Library. She read us some Halloween books and sang some Halloween songs. On Friday we had a fun filled day! In the morning the children put their raffle tickets in to try and win their favourite decorated pumpkin (Congratulations to Christopher on winning his pick!). In the afternoon we had Buddy Day. The children got to choose which room they wanted to play in (Kindergarten A, B or C) and each class had different activities for the children to participate in. It is also a nice way for them to play with friends from other classes! Here are some more pictures from our week. Have a safe and happy Halloween!
With Fall things all around us and Halloween coming fast some of the children have been showing an interest in pumpkins! This week we learned all about the life cycle of a pumpkin. We carved into a pumpkin and looked inside. We found seeds and pulp inside. The kids also described how the inside of a pumpkin felt. Some of the children described their findings as smooth, soft, slippery and cold. We had a discussion about what we can do with a pumpkin. Then we tried a couple of these ideas out! We carved a pumpkin, roasted some of the seeds and next week we will do some baking with a pumpkin! On French days, we continued learning about primary colours and how to make different colours. We did a fun science experiment using coloured water and paper towel. Each container of coloured water had a piece of paper towel inside of it leading to a container with clear water. Then we watched to see what would happen........ We noticed that when the water made its way up the paper towel and into the clear container the colours mixed to make new colours! In addition, we set up a centre for the children to do their own colour mixing using small container and eye droppers. Our dramatic play area became a pumpkin patch this week. The children really enjoyed exploring all the pumpkins and leaves in this area as well as being "farmers" selling pumpkins! With Halloween coming up we have started learning some new Halloween Songs. This week we also had a performance from Yaki. The children really enjoyed listening to all his songs and even helping to play instruments! Some of our SK children started showing an interest in creating their own stories. We made small books for them to draw out their stories and practice their writing and sounding out.
This week we continued learning about all things fall. We continued talking about fall and how the leaves are changing colour. We learned a new Fall Poem and a new fall song: We read the story "The Leaf Man" and then made our own leaf person and gave them a name. During our discussion about the leaves changing colours some of the children started to wonder about colours and how different colours are made. We experimented with different colours to see what would happen when we mixed them together. In French we remembered that rouge is red, and that jaune is yellow. We discovered that when we mix the rouge and jaune we make orange. We learned that bleu and jaune make vert! Vert is green! We then made a fun craft to show what we learned! Can you see the colours orange et vert? We also introduced Super Mini! He is a French super hero that the kids love. We made some special pumpkin spice scented playdough.
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we have been having many discussions and activities surrounding Thanksgiving this week. On Monday our class attended Thanksgiving Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church with the whole school. We read some books about Thanksgiving: And Learned a Thanksgiving Prayer: Thanksgiving Prayer (sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) I am thankful for my mother, and I am thankful for my dad I am thankful for my sisters, and for all the fun we have had I am thankful for my brothers. Many thanks on Thanksgiving. We also did some Thanksgiving Crafts! We also had a group discussion about why we are thankful and who we are thankful for, and here are some of the ideas we came up with: We continued with our Apple Inquiry, discussing different things that we can make with apples. And then we made some of these yummy treats! We learned how to make apples sauce and apple crisp! On Tuesday we went on a nature walk and collected some fall materials like leaves, sticks and pine cones! We then used the materials we found at our art table. In French we learned another fall song : "La Valse de L'automne" With Helping Hands we are Growing Together in Unity.
Using natural products to explore and discover. What do we see? What do we think? What do we wonder about our findings..........
